Episode 5 brings our little group of kids and military squad to the sewers leading us to our first full appearance of Pennywise. The episode is centered on three main parts, a tragic death, the military operation, and the big Pennywise reveal.
We come to find the kids back up at their hangout, and they hear someone or something up there with them, and it’s revealed Matty is still alive. Matty reveals that Phil is still alive down there somewhere. Lily and Matty argue, but she is able to convince them to go down to the sewers to find Phil. The kids are all scared of what might happen so the use Lily’s mom’s prescription drugs to help with anxiety, they make their way to the sewer and find themselves with the clown. This episode brings a more tense and tight feel in my opinion.
Pennywise is revealed, Matty isn’t alive, and neither is Phil, Suzie, or Teddy. Pennywise disguised himself as Matty and lured the kids into the sewers, and he started chasing them. Lily gets split up from the rest of the group and finds herself in a one-on-one situation against Pennywise, he lunged at her and stopped when he realized Lily had one of the pillars. The pillars are able to stop Pennywise, and they can severely harm him, this pillar was dropped by Taniel while running away from the soldiers. This gives an insight into the story and gives one of our main characters protection from Pennywise.
General Shaw orders a military operation (Operation Precept), they all head to the house on Neibolt street to enter the sewers from there. Seeking the pillars, all of the soldiers run in there blindly and slowly separate from each other, Pennywise takes them down one by one and the last people standing are Halloran and Hanlon. Halloran experiences some mind warping stuff, and Pennywise opens Halloran’s box. Hanlon was so on edge about who or what Pennywise was he started shooting at anything that he sees down there. The kids are trying to escape the sewer and Hanlon spots Will. He thought it was an illusion of Pennywise, so he opens fire, and his best friend Pauly takes a bullet to save the kids, and he bleeds out. As this episode comes to a close we know that no one is ever going to be safe in Derry.
