Episode 4 dives way deeper into the origin story of Pennywise. We dive into a couple different things within this episode. Marge has a weird encounter with an illusion cast by Pennywise, Charlotte is trying to help get Ronnie’s dad out of prison for being wrongfully accused, Will is having multiple encounters and debunking stuff, and the kids showing their “proof” to Chief Bowers.
Description 1:
The episode opens with the kids heading to the police station to show Chief Bowers the “proof” they go of Pennywise, the ghouls in the photos had disappeared making it unbelievable to the adults. Will goes fishing at a lake with his father to ease his mind, when his father goes to get more bait that’s when Pennywise strikes Will by pulling him under the water as a more burnt dead version of his father. Will survives this and heads home with his father. Will can’t sleep and uses his telescope and while skimming the neighborhood he gets frightened at the sight of a clown peeking out behind the tree in front of his house. Will, Lily, Rich, and Ronnie all meet up at Phil and Teddy’s old hangout to explain and discuss what happened to them, and they all come to the realization that Pennywise eats people and feeds off of their fear.
After the fishing incident, Leroy confronts General Shaw. Shaw brings Leroy to an interrogation where Dick Hallorann is psychically probing the mind of Taniel, Rose’s nephew, to locate a “weapon”. Through Taniel’s memories, a long flashback sequence unfolds, explaining the entity’s (called the “Galloo” by the local Native American tribe) arrival on Earth via a meteorite, and how the ancestors of Rose and Taniel used shards of the meteorite to create a barrier and cage the creature in the Western Woods. The military now seeks to find these 13 buried “pillars” to harness the entity’s power. The vision concludes by pinpointing the entity’s current location: the abandoned house on Neibolt Street. Hallorann, in a disturbing display of his powers, extracts the final bit of information from Taniel, leaving a chilling impression.
Charlotte keeps trying to help keep Hank Grogan from being wrongfully accused by the racist police force. Charlotte was able to get a small confession out of Hank and why he was out the night of “The Movie Theater Massacre”. He revealed he was in an inappropriate relationship with a married white woman. Hank didn’t reveal that detail to the police to not damage his reputation or the girl’s because it’s the 1960’s and African Americans were still singled out socially. This episode shows the towns real pervasive racism and realistic tones to the actual 60’s.
Overall, the episode was good for trying to show justice for the wrongfully accused, and I liked how they are slowly revealing Pennywise more and more.
